Over a year ago I became a Reservist for FEMA so I would be able to use my emergency management knowledge to help those who have been affected by a disaster after I retired. I wouldn't have ever guessed I would find my self in Puerto Rico a year later. I'm a trainer, not a first responder, so I don't show up until things have stabilized. FEMA is hiring a lot of locals to assist to help pump money back in the local economy and to be able to reduce the numbers of those who were deployed to the area. Things a far from being stabilized, since last week heavy rain caused mud slides and flooding and it may be months before there is some resemblance of stabilization and years before the infrastructure is rebuilt. Most of the island is without power and water. Almost 200 large generators have been installed to key facilities.

As a trainer, I will be training the local new hires as well as other FEMA employees.

My deployment was supposed to be for 30 days but I'm already hearing rumors that it may be extended to 60 or 90 days, so who knows.

Well Steve you inspired me to add some photos of our trip to New Zealand, North Island. What a beautiful place. My wife said she liked NZ better than Hawaii. We went there last November.

The Kauri trees were amazing. I had to take a photo with my wife in front of the tree, so you could get a perspective of how big they are.

As Steve said, make sure you push the "show all" button at the bottom of the photos so you can see all of them.

What I didn't realize if you notice the photo of the volcano, there is a smaller cone to the left. When a cone gets too large it will collapses on itself. The magma will continue on until it finds a weak spot and it will surface again, forming a new cone. There is actually a smaller third cone to the left just out of the photo.

If you are planning on taking a trip down under, we have friends who have a nice bed and breakfast by New Plymouth, they would love to have you stay with them.

Steve, I can't remember if I am late for your birthday this year or early for next year. Anyway, chose which one and Happy Birthday.

After serving the people of the State of Utah for over 41 years (27.5 years with State Parks and Recreation, and 13.7 years with Emergency Management) I am retiring today. I have very mixed feelings but it is time to start a new chapter in my life. Who knows where it will lead.

I had to post this. The top photo is my youngest son holding his niece and nephew prior to going on his mission. The bottom photo is a reenactment of the photo the day he returned from his mission two years later. Can you tell they had forgotten him.
