Tod Johnson

Tod Dalton Johnson passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on February 19, 2020.

Tod was born on July 23, 1947 to Delbert and Carolyn Johnson in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended East High School, graduating in 1965 where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball and quarterbacked his high school football team to the state championship. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1966 in the Brazil South Mission. Upon his return, he attended and graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and later with a Master of Business Administration. He also pledged Sigma Chi and those relationships lasted a lifetime.

Tod married Kathy Dahn on June 4, 1970 in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity. They have 3 children, Tod, Leanne, and Karoline and raised their family in Cottonwood Heights, Utah. He has 14 grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He instilled his love of sports and the outdoors in his children and grandchildren. Many hours were spent in his amazing backyard putting, throwing balls, and shooting hoops with his family. The Johnson home was a gathering place for all the extended family, where Tod was the leader and patriarch. He opened his home and gave his time to his family.

Tod was extremely athletic and was a passionate golfer. He spent hours on the golf course with his dad, son, wife, brother, other family members, and friends. Many relationships were built on the golf course and life lessons taught. Tod was a talented snow and water skier. He learned to ski from his wife and loved skiing fresh powder with her and his family. He always had a boat and was known for getting people up on water skis. Tod adored watching his children and grandchildren play sports and rarely missed a game. He was a wonderful coach, coaching his son and daughters in basketball, baseball, and softball.

Tod was very intelligent and had a keen memory. He could memorize long passages of scripture, loved math, and was a walking dictionary. Professionally, Tod was a small business owner, eventually settling in as a financial broker and starting his own leasing company, Franklin Funding.

The cornerstone of Tod’s life was his faith in Jesus Christ. He read the scriptures daily, especially the Book of Mormon. He served in the temple faithfully, where he felt the Savior’s love and stood as a witness for Him. His testimony of Jesus Christ, His resurrection and atonement, was unwavering and has blessed the lives of all who knew him. This gift is most cherished by his family.

Tod leaves behind his wife, Kathy, his 3 children Tod (Annette), Leanne (Brent), Karoline (Kyle), 14 grandchildren, 2 sisters, and many extended family members.

Funeral Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 7035 Nutree Drive, Cottonwood Heights, Utah 84121 on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 11:00 AM. Viewings will be held Friday, February 21, 2020 from 6:00-8:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00-10:45 AM at the same location.

To this day I remember Tod from little league days.  At 11 years old he was already a man and it scared the crap out of me to have to stand in the box and try to hit his fast ball, actually it was a relief to just strike out and get the hell out of there without getting hit, he could really zing the baseball.  Sorry to hear about his passing, hope the family does ok with it.

In the passing of Tod Johnson from this life to the next, I think all of us in the East High Class of '65 benefited  from Tod's accomplishments. I have great respect and appreciation for Tod's outstanding athletic achievements and friendship. However, more importantly, I now honor his legacy as a righteous husband, father, grandfather and example as a Man of God. Thanks for the memories.

I just read about Tod and I'm still in shock.  He was one of the good ones!  I remember his friendly demeanor and leadership. He was not above us but with us. I feel for Kathy and the family at this time of loss.

I didn't know Tod well, but remember what a great athlete he was...and that all us EHAGs had a crush on him!!

It is so hard to believe Tod is not with us anymore. What a beautiful obituary, and a life well lived! Lots of memories of Tod at the UofU, but here is a personal one after our college days. He invited me to play tennis with him at the Canyon Raquet Club. I was no athlete like Tod, and even at the height of my game, it was no match: 6-0, 6-1 for Tod (I think he must have felt sorry for me, so maybe he let me win one game in the second set!). A natural athlete and great family man.
