In Memory

John Hunter

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dearly beloved John Wesley “Wes” Hunter, son, husband, father, brother, and grandfather. Born September 27, 1946, he departed this world on May 1, 2022. He was 75 years old. Wes is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Judith M. Hunter, sons John, Jason, and Joshua Hunter and their spouses; five grandchildren, Jacob, Madeline, Bradley, Hannah, and Reverie Hunter; and siblings, Larry Hunter and Virginia Schimmel of Utah. Wes was preceded in death by his parents, James A. Hunter and Clara M. Kobs, and his siblings James Hunter and Margaret Bond.

Raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, Wes attended East High School, was drafted by the army during the Vietnam War, married Judy in 1968, then completed his B.S. degree at Westminster College. In 1973, the couple moved to Northern California where they both worked and raised their three children. Wes was often on “dad duty” with sports, dinners, and bedtime. Over the years, he was active with various youth sports, Boy Scouts, and the Washington High School Grad Night Committee.

Out of all his roles, Wes thrived as a husband, brother, father, and grandfather the most. He rarely missed a game, activity, awards program, or event that involved his kids or grandkids. A generous soul, he was the first to offer help, pay the tab, pull the chair, hold the door, and offer kindness with a side of humor. “Age before beauty” was a favorite phrase. He loved family dinners, a good laugh, great friends, and any opportunity to help others if he was able.

Baptized at his family’s First American Baptist Church in Utah, Wes was quiet about his faith but believed in everlasting life through his relationship with Jesus Christ.

Our family wants to acknowledge their gratitude for the excellent compassionate and caring help from all the healthcare teams during Wes’ illness.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Sandy Amos Cancer Center; C/O Washington/ UCSF Hospital Healthcare Foundation, 2000 Mowry Avenue, Fremont CA 94538.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 9 at Noon at the Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward, California.
