Jo Ellen Brasher (Williams)

Jo Ellen Brasher (Williams)

On Sept. 4, 2002, Jo Ellen Brasher Williams died from complications of lymphoma. Jo was born Aug. 18, 1947, in Price, Utah to Kirk and Annis Carlson Brasher. Jo married Charles H. "Hank" Williams on August 9, 1968. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. What characterized Jo's life was her passion and her zest for living. She had the opportunity to have homes all over the country (UT, WY, ID, FL, GA, AZ, VA) as well as to visit many parts of the world. She took every opportunity to explore and enjoy the culture and the people around her. Art was another of her talents and passions. She graduated in 1969 from the University of Utah with a degree in Interior Design and had the ability to make everything she touched beautiful. She always had a hunger for reading and knowledge; seeking words that expressed her humanity. She was able to develop her skills as an excellent cook as well. Good food was a treasure to her and she loved being able to share it with her family and friends. But most of all she loved spending time with her family. She had a strong belief and appreciation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and was faithful in all her responsibilities and enjoyed the chance to love and serve those around her. Jo is survived by her husband, Hank Williams; her father, Kirk Brasher; mother-in-law, Velda Williams; sisters, Karen Brasher Tanner; Jill Brasher Spencer; children, Matthew Tyler (Sarah DuFord) Williams; Samuel Thomas (Raelynn Barton) Williams; Jan Elizabeth Williams; Mindy Anne Williams; grandchildren, Simon Oscar, Ellen Katherine, George Henry, and Charlotte Ophelia Williams. She is preceded in death by her mother, Annis Brasher. Her family is grateful for the love and influence she brought into our lives. A visitation will be held Friday, September 6, 2002, from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City (Enter from 300 East) Prior to the funeral service on Saturday, September 7, 2002, friends and loved ones may call at the Yalecrest LDS Chapel, 1035 South 1800 East, Salt Lake City, at 11:00 a.m. The funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon at the same chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America, in memory of Jo Williams, P.O. Box 9025, Pittsfield, MA 01202.

Glen, I didn't know that Jo Ellen had passed away.  What a sweet, creative girl she was in high school, and apparently became a sweet, creative woman as well.   She will be remembered.

Jo Ellen was my nieghbor and friend.  When I was about 14 years old she held a party for the kids in our neighborhood.  It was the first time I had been invited to a real party with real girls.  My mother said I put on a bit too much after shave especially when I didn't shave yet.  She made us all feel comfortable and set in motion my career in dating.  Not a kinder woman than Jo Ellen.

Jo Ellen was my Friday night buddy in high school. When we both needed to dream up something fun to do on a free Friday night we depended on each other. We also spent many late nights and weekends, as literary editors of the yearbook, trying to make clever copy for each club, team and activity page, knowing no one would ever read that stuff anyway. First we would write the most ridiculous things we could think of, then laugh our heads off and eventually get back to writing the real, inane thing we were supposed to so Janice Fowles, our editor, wouldn't scowl at us the next day if we missed our deadline. I can still see the way Jo Ellen put her hair back behind her ear when she was ready to get down to business. She was always eons ahead of me in the style department, the first to have the newest haircut style and the coolest new shoes from The Chalk Garden. I wish I could hear what she would write about the reunion, first the hilarious version, then the one that would past muster with the editor.
