Karen Bateman Cook

June 4, 1947 - September 21, 2022

"This too shall pass"

Karen Fern Bateman “Cook Cook”, as she would tell friends and family, passed away peacefully at age 75 on September 21, 2022 due to advanced stages of dementia. She was born June 4, 1947 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Wayne Martin Bateman and Fern Dansie Bateman.  She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was raised in the Garden Park Ward in Salt Lake City, Utah. She graduated from East High School in 1965 and attended Brigham Young University.

Karen met her first husband Dale Eugene Cook, in California and married on the 28th of May, 1971 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together they had four amazing children: Karen Melyssa, Dale Brent, Caysi Nicole, and Bradley Wayne.

Karen's life revolved around music. Her favorite callings in church were stake choir director and various ward choir director callings. She was an accomplished piano and organ player. No one could play the organ as well as Karen. Karen was multi-talented:she loved to knit, crochet, and sew. She was an amazing cook, and her Sunday dinners will always be remembered as her best meals. Karen loved to travel and was always up for a road trip. She loved nice cars with sunroofs, loved changing her hair color, and her nails always looked pristine. Karen loved people, children, and especially babies. She was kind and compassionate to others. She forgave others just as God forgave us. She loved life and others around her.

For many years, Karen worked for the trucking industry. She was an OS&D (Overage, Shortage & Damage) officer for FedEx Freight and was responsible for shipments as trucks would come and leave the terminal where she worked. It was meticulous work, and she did it to perfection as she did all her duties and responsibilities.

Karen met her second husband Greg in church when she was playing the organ at a church service. She was here following a divorce of seven years. Greg had his youngest two children ,Heather & Kayla, with him after his divorce of two years. He noticed her last name was also Cook in the program. Mutual curiosity by Karen & Greg joined the two in introductions, dating, months of wonderful home cooking, and then marriage. This combined both their families of eleven children.

Karen and Greg were happily married for 23 years after having been civilly joined on August 7, 1999, and then exactly 6 months later sealed in the Boise Idaho Temple on February 7, 2000. They were never separated during their years of marriage, having traveled back east twice to Greg's place of birth in New York state: Karen's first time east of the Mississippi. Karen loved animals, especially cats. She had various cats throughout her life and would spend hours trying to find the perfect name. Ultimately, she would end up calling them "little kitty" or "kitten" regardless of their names. The last cat she had for thirteen years, and it was hard to see her faithful companion go!

Along her journey in life, she accumulated many friends who she loved dearly and who dearly loved her. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. We are thrilled she has been reunited with her parents; she was her mother's favorite child! Karen was preceded in death by her first husband Dale Eugene Cook, and her parents.

She is survived by her husband Gregory Cook, her siblings: Stanley (Debby) Bateman, Pamela (Steve) Lehman, Richard (Debbie) Bateman, Garth (Machelle) Bateman, Mary (Tory) McDonald, Gloria Shippers,  her children: Melyssa (Scott) Lindsay, Brent Cook, Caysi (Stephen) Tranmer, Bradley (Shannon) Cook, Gregory Allen Cook II, Jonathan Cook, Sean (Melissa) Cook, Angela Moisan, Danielle (John) Thompson, Heather (Robert) Bassett, Kayla Cook, 15 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, loving cousins, and many nieces and nephews who adored their "Auntie".

A special thank you to Covington Senior Living and her hospice nurse Jessica for supporting Karen and providing exceptional care while living there.
