Karen Louise Beatty, 64, passed away Sunday, May 13, 2012, from lung cancer, and a metastatic brain tumor. Her journey was difficult, but her spirit never wavered. Karen Louise Schatten was born on July 2,1947, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Vivian Schmittroth and Leo Schatten. Karen attended East High School and received an associates degree from the Salt Lake Community College. She married Paul Harwood in 1966 and later divorced. They had two children, Shauna and Jason. Karen retired after many years of working for the federal government. In 1989, she married Dennis Beatty, who preceded her in death in 2000. Karen moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 2006, to be with her daughter and her two beloved grandchildren, Samuel and Georgia Prince. She spent many precious moments playing games and having tea parties. Karen returned to Salt Lake City in April 2012 to be at home for her final month. Karen is survived by her two children, Jason Harwood, Salt Lake City, and Shauna and David Prince, Colorado Springs, Colorado; her two grandchildren, Samuel and Georgia Prince; her sisters Kay Lee and Karrie Schatten, and her brother, Karl and Sharon Schatten; her nieces and nephews and a great-niece. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dennis, and her dog Rascal. Her family would like to thank the many friends in Colorado Springs; Marilyn, Terri, and all her friends at the Pinon Sun Condominium; her friends Barbara, Mary, and Cindy; and the ladies in the F.E.W. organizations both in Utah and Colorado The family would also like to thank all of the staff at Penrose Main Hospital in Colorado Springs and the CareSource Hospice in Salt Lake City for the kind and loving care they gave to Karen. A graveside service will be held on May 23 at the Wasatch Lawn Cemetery, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. A celebration of Karen's life will take place this summer in Salt Lake City on July 23rd.

I am pretty sure that Karen played the flute in orchestra--I really liked her and she was very friendly and happy.  We had fun with Mr. Young and hanging out in the orchestra room!
