Marilyn Carr died peacefully on the morning of November 3, 2003 with family and friends by her side. She will be woefully missed and revered in memory. Marilyn was an inspirational teacher, a thoughtful friend, a tireless mother, a gentle and tolerant listener; someone who changed lives. Her love and sense of peace, her calm, bright eyes, smile and her laughter will all echo in our memories for a great time to come. Throughout her life, Marilyn was a teacher. For more than 30 years she taught in the Salt Lake City public school system and then at Rowland Hall St. Mark's. She also worked at the Utah Symphony for several years. Marilyn became deeply involved in meditation and the Ananda Church of Self-Realization; she taught workshops in health and wellness education in Salt Lake, California and Hawaii. In California she was also on the Board of Directors of Sierra Medical Clinic. Marilyn loved music. She played the guitar and sang throughout her life; music brought her joy and comfort. In California she was a member of the Ananda Church Choir, which performs internationally. Marilyn's friends called her an old soul, reflective and tranquil. She valued her time alone. She found joy in the silence and stillness of the Sierra Nevadas and the deep canyons of Southern Utah. Her solitude provided nourishment to the rest of her life. With her friends and others, Marilyn found a similar fulfillment to solitude in long, thoughtful conversation. Life was not a blur to Marilyn; it was deliberate. Her strong mind and sense of purpose will leave a gap not easily filled. Marilyn was born in Portland, Oregon on September 4, 1947 and lived in Salt Lake City for most of her life. For the past several years she had been living in the community at Ananda Village near Nevada City, California. Marilyn graduated from East High School in Salt Lake, received a degree in English Literature from the University of Utah and a Masters Degree in Special Education from the University of Redlands in California. Marilyn was preceded in death by her mother, Lula Dunn Carr, her father, Ezra O. Carr, and her sister, Phyllis (Roger) Thompson. Marilyn is survived by her son, Anthony Gill, and her sister, Kathleen (Duston) Harvey, nieces, nephews and numerous relatives and friends. Her family is awed and grateful at the many prayers and expressions of love from everyone Marilyn touched. A gathering for Marilyn's family and friends will be held at Virginia Menlove's home (91 Edgecombe Drive, Salt Lake City) between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2003. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial gifts be sent to the American Cancer Society or the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. |

Marilyn, I always liked you so much. And I appreciate the tutoring you provided at Rowland Hall. I will miss seeing you at the reunion.

Marilyn was beautiful inside and out. I knew Marilyn at Bryant and at East and beyond high school I double dated with her a few times. She was darling, soft spoken, bright with a quick, gorgeous smile. I'm not surprised to learn that she was a valued teacher as she was always very thoughtful and well read. She was just so cute and lovely and it makes me so sad to think that she's not here with us celebrating our 50 year high school reunion. Karren Kelly Hammer
